Carpenters Local 770 History

In August, 1881, thirty-six carpenters from eleven cities met in Chicago and created the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Carpenters Local Union #770 was chartered on February 15, 1916. For 33 years, the Union was headquartered in several different places before building it’s current building. They have been at 507 South 3rd Street since July 29th, 1949.

In 1997, the new Apprenticeship Training Center was built at 1720 Presson Ave. The 10,000 square foot facility teaches new carpenters how to use the latest tools and techniques of the trade. Apprentices in the training program go to school 4 times each year during their 4 year apprenticeship. The center also hosts Journeyman upgrade classes that help to keep members the most highly trained craftsmen in the field and thereby providing local contractors with the very best carpenters.

The Carpenter’s Union serves as a referral office for local carpenters and contractors. Out of work carpenters are referred to union employers who are in need of workers.

Members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America receive above average wages as well as medical and dental insurance and a very good retirement plan.
